When A Page Doesn't Work
What can you do?
I wanted to show off a page from Illümon and talk a bit about how it started off originally, and why it needed to change. First, here's the original page.
Larter on in production, I ended up adding additional pages to the book. This meant that the book needed an extra page added to it to balance out the page count for the printer, and so I decided to take this one page and turn it into two. Here's what that looks like:
This took a LOT of editing, as you could maybe guess! If I were working digitally, it would have been easy, but this was all scanned artwork and required some "digital surgery" to patch up. I had to add a lot of scenery with copying and pasting.
First, I took the first large panel of the ruined city and spread it across a two page spread. This created some empty space on the right side of the page, though. I had to digitally recreate some of the artwork by compositing a background using the already-existing art. All of the rocks on the right side of the page are made from the rocks on the left side of the page.
Then, I took the remaining four panels and pasted them there at the bottom, and it was good to go! I had to crop out some of the sky too, but that’s fine. I think it turned out alright!
